The Christmas Eve Bidding Prayer

P     Beloved in Christ, may it be our care and delight this Christmas Eve to prepare ourselves to hear again the message of the angels; in heart and mind to go unto Bethlehem and see this thing which is come to pass, and the Babe lying in a manger.

Let us read and mark in Holy Scripture the story of the loving purposes of God from the first days of our disobedience to the glorious Redemption brought us by this Holy Child; and let us make this holy house of God glad with our carols of praise:

But first let us pray for the needs of His whole world; for peace and goodwill over all the earth; for unity and brotherhood within the Church He came to build, and especially in our nation, our state and our community. And because this of all things would rejoice His heart, let us at this time remember in His name the poor and the helpless, the cold, the hungry and the oppressed; the sick in body and in mind and them that mourn; the lonely and the unloved; the aged and the little children; all who do not know the Lord Jesus, or who love Him not, or who by sin have grieved His heart of love.

Lastly let us remember before God all those who rejoice with us, but upon another shore and in a greater light, that multitude which no man can number, whose hope was in the Word made flesh, and with whom, in this Lord Jesus, we forevermore are one.

P     Lord in Your mercy,
C    Hear our prayer.

P     These prayers and praises let us humbly offer up to the throne of heaven, in the words which Christ himself has taught us:
C    Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

On Christmas through the Centuries

Today’s Christmas worship reaches back through the ages to bring to us the message of our Savior’s birth and God’s plan of salvation. The oldest portion of our service is the Old Testament Lesson from the Prophet Isaiah which was written about 700 B.C. (Psalm 98 is possibly older).
Our celebration of the Lord’s Supper began about A.D. 33 and The New Testament lessons were written in the first century. Various parts of the liturgy developed through the following years with the Nicene Creed coming from the year 325.
The most recent parts of today’s worship are the hymns and carols. They range from the 1600’s to 1986. Here is the list:

O Come, All Ye Faithful – mid 1800’s
Angels from the Realms of Glory – early 1800’s
Angels We Have Heard on High – 1862
Let All Together Praise Our God – early 1900’s
Where Shepherds Lately Knelt – 1986
Gentle Mary Laid Her Child – early 1900’s
Away in a Manger – 1885
Let Us All with Gladsome Voice – 1600’s
Joy to the World – early 1700’s
O Little Town of Bethlehem – 1800’s

We thank God that the Christmas message still brings comfort today as it has for countless Christians throughout the ages. The message of Christmas is more than love, joy and peace. It is the message of forgiveness of sins, life and salvation through our Savior Jesus who came into the world to be born, live, die, and rise again for each of us. May our hymns of praise to hymn have no end.

Christmas and December 25

No one knows the exact date of Jesus’ birth. This is true. But do you realize how ancient the celebration of Christmas actually is? We know that celebrating Christ’s birth on December 25 was already an old and established practice in A.D. 312.
The false claim is often repeated that the Church chose December 25 as the date in order to preempt an old pagan celebration. However history tells another story. In fact we know that celebrating Christmas on December 25 was the practice of a group of early Christians (Donatists) who were especially careful not to have any connection to the pagan religion of the Roman Empire.
While the date of Christ’s birth is lost to history, it is clear that celebrating Christmas on December 25th is not of pagan origin. Then where does it come from? The best explanation is that the Church calculated the date of Jesus’ birth from the date of the Annunciation of the Angel Gabriel to Mary. The early Church determined this date to be March 25. Nine months later Mary would travel to Bethlehem and deliver baby Jesus, wrap Him in swaddling cloths and lay him in a manger.

Almighty God, grant that the birth of Your only-begotten Son in the flesh may set us free from the bondage of sin; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Old Testament Reading Isaiah 52:7–10
7How beautiful upon the mountains
are the feet of him who brings good news,
who publishes peace, who brings good news of happiness,
who publishes salvation,
who says to Zion, “Your God reigns.”
8The voice of your watchmen—they lift up their voice;
together they sing for joy;
for eye to eye they see

9Break forth together into singing,
you waste places of Jerusalem,

Epistle Reading Hebrews 1:1–6

1Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, 2but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. 3He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, 4having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.
5For to which of the angels did God ever say,
You are my Son,
today I have begotten you”?
Or again,
I will be to him a father,
and he shall be to me a son”?
6And again, when he brings the firstborn into the world, he says,
Let all God’s angels worship him.”

Holy Gospel John 1:1–18

1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was in the beginning with God. 3All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. 6There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. 8He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light.
9The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. 10He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. 11He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. 12But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, 13who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.
14And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
15(John bore witness about him, and cried out, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.’”) 16And from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. 17For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known.

The Christmas Story from the King James Version

The best known and most widely used translation of the Bible is the King James Version. As a result, the Christmas story is most widely known in the King James Version. This is the version that was read by Linus in A Charlie Brown Christmas.
We are especially thankful to God tonight because this year is the 400th anniversary of the reading of the Christmas story on Christmas Eve from the King James Version of the Bible. It was first published in 1611.

The Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols

The Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols celebrating the birth of Jesus is historically used on Christmas Eve. The story of the fall of humanity, the promise of the Messiah, and the birth of Jesus is told in nine short Bible readings including Old Testament prophecies and New Testament fulfillment in the Gospels. These lessons are interspersed with the singing of Christmas carols, hymns and choir music.
This format is based on an order of worship first used on Christmas Eve 1880 in Cornwall, England by Bishop Edward White Benson. He later became Archbishop of Canterbury. This is the time when Currier & Ives were producing their well-known prints.
The original liturgy has been adapted and used by churches all over the world. Lessons and Carols most often occur in Anglican, Roman Catholic, Lutheran, and Presbyterian Churches. However, numerous Christian churches have adopted this service, or a variation as part of their Christmas celebrations.

Lesson Two Genesis 22:15-18

God promises to faithful Abraham that through his descendants - and eventually the Messiah - all the nations of the earth will be blessed with salvation.

15And the angel of the LORD called to Abraham a second time from heaven 16and said, “By myself I have sworn, declares the LORD, because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, 17I will surely bless you, and I will surely multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and as the
sand that is on the seashore. And your offspring shall possess the gate of his enemies, 18and in your offspring shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, because you have obeyed my voice.”

Lesson Three Isaiah 9:2, 6-7

The birth and kingdom of Christ are foretold by the prophet.

2 The people who walked in darkness
have seen a great light;
those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness,
on them has light shined.
6For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given;
and the government shall be upon his shoulder,
and his name shall be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
7Of the increase of his government and of peace
there will be no end,
on the throne of David and over his kingdom,
to establish it and to uphold it
with justice and with righteousness
from this time forth and forevermore.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

Lesson Four Micah 5:2-4

The prophet foretells the glory of little Bethlehem, birthplace of Jesus.

2 But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah,
who are too little to be among the clans of Judah,
from you shall come forth for me
one who is to be ruler in Israel,
whose origin is from of old,
from ancient days.
3Therefore he shall give them up until the time
when she who is in labor has given birth;
then the rest of his brothers shall return
to the people of Israel.
4And he shall stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the Lord,
in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God.
And they shall dwell secure, for now he shall be great
to the ends of the earth.

The Christmas Gospel ~ Lesson Six Luke 2:1-7

St. Luke tells of the birth of Jesus. We read in unison.

1And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed.
2(And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)
3And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.
4And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)
5To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.
6And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.
7And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

The Christmas Gospel ~ Lesson Seven Luke 2:8-16

The shepherds go to the manger. We read in unison.

8And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.
9And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
10And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
11For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
12And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.
13And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,
14Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
15And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.
16And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.

Lesson Eight Matthew 2:1-11

The Wise Men are led by the star of Jesus.

1Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, 2saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” 3When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; 4and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. 5They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet:

6“‘And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
for from you shall come a ruler
who will shepherd my people Israel.’”

7Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star had appeared. 8And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and worship him.” 9After listening to the king, they went on their way. And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was. 10When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. 11And going into the house they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh.

Lesson Nine John 1:1-15

St. John unfolds the great mystery of the Incarnation.

15(John bore witness about him, and cried out, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.’”)

The Fourth Sunday in Advent

Contemporary

As We Gather
God chose a faithful young woman to be the mother of our Savior.  She recognized that in the world’s eyes she was not highly regarded but God set the might of the world in motion to bring her and Joseph to Bethlehem for Jesus to be born. He brings down rulers from their thrones but lifts up the humble. During this Advent time and always may we, like Mary, humbly serve the Savior of the Nations.

Lift up your heads, O gates! And be lifted up, O ancient doors,
that the King of glory may come in.
Who is this King of glory?
The LORD, strong and mighty, the LORD, mighty in battle!
Lift up your heads, O gates! And lift them up, O ancient doors,
that the King of glory may come in.
Who is this King of glory?
The LORD of hosts, he is the King of glory!

LIGHTING THE ADVENT WREATH - THE FOURTH CANDLE:

P     As we light the Fourth candle on our Advent wreath, we rejoice that God chose the Virgin Mary to be the mother of Immanuel, God with us, our Savior, Jesus.  May we join with Mary in magnifying the Lord for doing great and mighty things through such a lowly birth in Bethlehem. Let us also humble ourselves to prepare for the Savior of the Nations to come.

C    Savior of the nations, come,
Virgin’s Son, make here Your home!
Marvel now, O heav’n and earth,
That the Lord chose such a birth.

Here a maid was found with child,
Yet remained a virgin mild.
In her womb this truth was shown:
God was there upon His throne.

The Formula of Concord, Epitome, Article VIII, 12, 13.

We believe, teach, and confess that Mary conceived and bore not merely a man and no more, but God’s true Son.  Therefore, she also is rightly called and truly is “the mother of God.”
We also believe, teach, and confess that it was not a mere man who suffered, died, was buried, descended to hell, rose from the dead, ascended into heaven, and was raised to God’s majesty and almighty power for us.  But it was a man whose human nature has such a profound, indescribable union and communion with God’s Son that it is one person with Him.

Readings from Holy Scripture

Old Testament Reading                              2 Samuel 7:1–11, 16

1Now when the king lived in his house and the Lord had given him rest from all his surrounding enemies, 2the king said to Nathan the prophet, “See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells in a tent.” 3And Nathan said to the king, “Go, do all that is in your heart, for the Lord is with you.”
4But that same night the word of the Lord came to Nathan, 5“Go and tell my servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord: Would you build me a house to dwell in? 6I have not lived in a house since the day I brought up the people of Israel from Egypt to this day, but I have been moving about in a tent for my dwelling. 7In all places where I have moved with all the people of Israel, did I speak a word with any of the judges of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel, saying, “Why have you not built me a house of cedar?”’ 8Now, therefore, thus you shall say to my servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, that you should be prince over my people Israel. 9And I have been with you wherever you went and have cut off all your enemies from before you. And I will make for you a great name, like the name of the great ones of the earth. 10And I will appoint a place for my people Israel and will plant them, so that they may dwell in their own place and be disturbed no more. And violent men shall afflict them no more, as formerly, 11from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel. And I will give you rest from all your enemies. Moreover, the Lord declares to you that the Lord will make you a house. . . . 16And your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me. Your throne shall be established forever.’”

P     Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion.
C    Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem.
P     Behold, your king is coming to you;
C    righteous and having salvation.
P     Blessèd is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
C    From the house of the Lord we bless you.

26In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, 27to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. And the virgin’s name was Mary. 28And he came to her and said, “Greetings, O favored one, the Lord is with you!” 29But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and tried to discern what sort of greeting this might be. 30And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. 32He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, 33and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”
34And Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?”
35And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God. 36And behold, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son, and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. 37For nothing will be impossible with God.” 38And Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.
