Pentecost Season Devotion, The Fifth Sunday after Pentecost – July 13

As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it proves unfruitful. Matthew 13:22

The Gospel Lesson for today is the Parable of the Sower. You can read it in Matthew 13:1-9 and Jesus explanation in Matthew 13:18-23.

There is very little more disheartening for a pastor than to see once apparently faithful and loyal people leave the church. In almost every instance when I have talked to someone about it, the fault doesn’t rest on their shoulders. The pastor and the church are to blame.

In the Parable of the Sower Jesus foresees this situation and explains why people fall away. In fact according to this parable it is not the sower nor the seed that is at fault.

Jesus describes one of the reasons people fall away from Christ and His Church in Matthew 13:22 – “The cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches.”  In my experience young people are not the only ones vulnerable to this temptation. “The Good Life” has whispered in the ears of many, no matter their age. A better job opportunity, a new cadre of friends, a new and better lifestyle offer ready excuses for spending time away from God’s word and His Church.

Let Jesus’ warning be clearly heard. He gave His life for you on the cross.  His love for you continues even when you turn your back on Him. If you have allowed something to pull you away from Christ, remember that His arms are open. He wants to welcome you back.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, if I am tempted to fall away, grant that I would remember the words of Peter, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Amen.

God’s richest blessings in Christ,

Pastor Philip Quardokus
