Eastertide Devotion – June 4

Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. 1 Peter 5:7 (King James Version)

Patrick McManus is one of my favorite authors. He writes humorous short stories and mysteries. I think I own and have read every one of his books.

One of his stories is called “The Worry Box” (The Good Samaritan Strikes Again  - 1992). Pat McManus tells us in this story that everyone carries a “Worry Box” and it is always filled!  When new big worries come along, we sort through our Worry Box and find the little worries and throw them on the floor so that there is room in our Worry Box for the new worries.

When that big worry is taken care of, we go around and find all the little worries that we threw on the floor.  We gather them up and put them back into our worry box so that it is always filled!

I find this to be an important insight. Stress and worry are a big part of life. It occupies so much of our time. It is very difficult to deal with stress because we are carrying around a “Worry Box” that is always filled.

St. Peter tells us that there is a better way.  Don’t carry your Worry Box at all.  Let God carry it for you.  He cares for you and is able to handle all of your worries. There is no problem so great that He can’t handle it.  There is no anxiety so strong that He cannot give you the peace that passes all understanding.

Prayer: Dear God, thank you for caring for me.  Grant me the faith to cast my cares upon you. Amen.
